The lowest fall was recorded in the village of Deelen, near the eastern city of Arnhem, where the temperature dropped to 18 degrees Celsius below zero. That is a record for 2009.

Experts are predicting it will continue to remain bitterly cold throughout the country, with fresh falls of snow on Saturday night and Sunday.
